Weeks 1-2: Permitting & Layout
Your builder submits plans to the city for permitting (1-4 weeks depending on jurisdiction). Once approved, the pool is laid out and staked on your property.
Weeks 2-3: Excavation
Excavation takes 1-3 days for most pools. Soil conditions, rock, and access can extend this phase. Expect heavy equipment, noise, and temporary disruption to your yard.
Weeks 3-5: Steel & Plumbing
Rebar is tied to form the pool's structural framework. Plumbing lines for returns, drains, and features are installed. Electrical conduit is run. This is inspected before gunite.
Weeks 5-7: Shell (Gunite/Shotcrete)
Concrete is sprayed over the steel framework to form the pool shell. The shell then cures for 7-14 days with daily watering before the next phase.
Pro Tip
Don't rush the curing process - proper cure time prevents cracking and ensures structural integrity.
Weeks 7-10: Tile, Coping & Decking
Waterline tile, coping, and deck work happen simultaneously. This is where your pool starts to look like a pool. Equipment installation also occurs during this phase.
Weeks 10-12: Interior Finish & Fill
The final plaster, pebble, or aggregate finish is applied, and the pool is filled with water. Chemical startup begins immediately. Your builder should handle the initial chemical balancing.
