Pool Filters: Choosing & Maintaining the Right One

Your pool filter keeps water clear by trapping particles too small to be removed by skimming. The three main types each have distinct maintenance needs and filtration capabilities.

    Sand Filters

Filter down to 20-40 microns. Simplest maintenance (backwash when pressure rises 8-10 PSI above clean). Sand lasts 5-7 years. Best for: large pools, minimal-maintenance preference. Cost: $300-$800.

    Cartridge Filters

Filter down to 10-15 microns. Remove and hose off cartridges every 4-8 weeks. Cartridges last 1-3 years. Best for: most residential pools, spa combos. Cost: $400-$1,200.

    DE Filters

Filter down to 3-5 microns (finest filtration). Require backwashing and recharging with DE powder. Grids last 5-10 years. Best for: pools requiring crystal-clear water, allergy sufferers. Cost: $500-$1,500.
    Pro Tip

DE filters produce the clearest water but require the most maintenance knowledge. Make sure your service company is comfortable with DE systems.

    Maintenance Schedule

All filters: monitor pressure gauge weekly. Clean or backwash when pressure is 8-10 PSI above clean starting pressure. Deep-clean all filter types with chemical soak 1-2 times per year.
