Pool Filter: When to Repair and When to Replace

Your pool filter is critical for water clarity and safety. Understanding the three main filter types and their common issues helps you decide between repair and replacement.

    Sand Filters

Sand filters are the simplest and least expensive. The sand media lasts 5-7 years before needing replacement ($200-$400). The multiport valve is the most common failure point, costing $150-$300 to replace.

    Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters offer excellent filtration and are easy to maintain. Cartridges need replacement every 1-3 years ($80-$250 per set). The filter tank itself can last 10-15 years with proper care.
    Pro Tip

Deep-clean your cartridge filters every 3-6 months with a cartridge cleaning solution - it extends their life significantly.

    DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters

DE filters provide the finest filtration but require the most maintenance. Grid assemblies last 5-10 years ($200-$500 to replace). Manifolds and internal parts can also fail over time.

When to Replace the Entire Filter

Cracked tanks, unrepairable internal components, or persistent water clarity issues despite new media all justify full replacement. If repair costs exceed 50% of a new unit, replacement is the better investment.
